The watchmaking name of A. Lange & Sohne was first established in 1868 by Aldoph Lange in the town of Glasshutte, Saxony. Originally founded in 1845, then destroyed by Russian bombers during World War II in 1945, it wasn’t until the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989 that Walter Lange once again established A. Lange & Sohne. Then, in 1994, the world was introduced to Lange’s first new collection of mechanical watches.

In 1895, with the advent of chronometer department, A. Lange & Sonne establishes connection with the Berlin Astronomical Observatory. (An imperial patent confirmed the company’s marine chronometer sensibility in 1879).

In 1902, Emil (Richard’s brother) is invited to join the International Jury of the World Exhibition in Paris; the Emperor Wilhelm II buys magnificent pocket watch with diamonds and enamel to the Sultan of Turkey; Grande Complication pocket watch model made of gold, with perpetual calendar, minute repeater, replacement second hand and minute counter was sold in 1908 for 4930 gold marks, the sum, which then corresponded to the price of two houses. Manufacture becomes so important for the region, which they cut down a 400-meter tunnel in a scale, to provide necessary hydro energy for all production processes. The activity ceases with the end of World War II, when all factories in East Germany were nationalized.

1846 – Lange produces a so-called “lathe from Glashutte” with a flywheel, which replaces jigsaw and can handle parts with greater accuracy.

1863 – the studio creates the first model of pocket chronograph.

1866 – they produce watch with date, day of week, month and moon phases pointers.

1874 – there appears a ladies model with a mechanism (diameter is only 25 mm).

1891 – the first model of pocket watch with perpetual swing, which pendulum is made of platinum.

1920 – after the First World War Glashutte companies are combined into two large groups to combat economic crisis (1 U.S. dollar is worth 100 billion marks).

1945 – Lange factory was bombed by Soviet Union.

1948 – GDR government confiscates and nationalizes A. Lange & Sonne Company. Walter Lange is forced to leave the country and move to the West.

1990 – in December, Lange Uhren GmbH company is registered in Dresden. The new company restores previous A. Lange & Sonne brand and moves indoors, where Strasser & Rohde precise pendulum watch factory once was located.

1994 – they created a modern collection, full of technological innovations, and at the same time following a century-old tradition of manual winding high-quality mechanisms. The first four models – Lange 1, Saxonia, Arkade and Tourbillon pour le Merite are produced in series, numbering a total of 700 copies. The company immediately gains a strong position on the market.

1996 – there appears “1815″ model with manual winding and small second hand.

1997 – they produced Langematik – the first model with an automatic Sax-o-Mat mechanism in the new generation of Lange watches. The mechanism of hand setting represents a new world level. There appears Cabaret – a rectangular model for men with a new form of mechanism; “1815″ model is complemented with range index version.

1998 – Walter Lange receives Free State of Saxony Order from Prime Minister Kurt Biedenkopf for outstanding achievements in watchmaking. Completion of the second manufacture building construction is marked with a commemorative Lange 1 series, limited by 100 copies, with gold face and a part of trigger mechanism. (During construction, its area increased from original 1500 sq ft to 4000 sq ft). There happened an opening of their own watch school, which recruits 9 students per year and specializes in preparation of craftsmen for production of “historic” watches.

1999 – After four years of hard work there appears Datograph, the first modern chronograph, signed by A. Lange & Sonne, with precise counter of minute bugs, flyback function and a large date index. They produce “1815″ model with lunar phases in a reduced size, which work is counted for 1000 years.

2000 – The House gains ownership of the historic building built in 1873 and confiscated in 1948, which served as a family and company’s residence. The same year, Richemont group acquires three “pearls” of watch-making – A. Lange & Sohne, Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWS.

2001 – Jubilaums-Langematik model, issued in a series of 500 copies, made of platinum with enamel on face, marks the new millennium and the tenth anniversary of the company’s revival. Lange 1 Tourbillon model with power reserve and large date indicator is released in series: 150 copies made of platinum and 250 – from pink gold; it has a double drum, very little adjusting and firing mechanism, pinion of tourbillon from steel polished to a mirror finish; Lange 1 Soiree is made of white gold and pearl; Langematik with large date index and “1815″ with a reserve represent models made of pink gold.

2002 – After Gunter Blumlein’s death Lange Company lost a man, who returned it former glory. The company’s operative management and completion of the brand’s promotion on an international level are imposed on a young manager Fabian Krone. This year marked the debut of a new Caliber L 901.5, placed in Lange 1 Moon Phase model. Index of moon phases is performed with surprising realism: the growing or waning moon slowly moves perfectly in step with the clockwise. Error is precisely reduced to 1.9 seconds per day, for a total of 57 seconds for each lunar month.

2003 – the whole attention is focused on production of Grande Lange l “Luna Mundi”, pair models of impressive sizes (41.9 mm in diameter) that show the Moon’s motion, respectively, for the Northern Hemisphere (case of white gold with the image of Ursa Major constellation on face) and for the South (of pink gold with the image of the Southern Cross); released in a limited edition of 101 sets. Sizes of Grande Langematik (40 mm) with Zero-Reset system and Grande Lange l (41, 9 mm) with a new caliber L901.2 are increased. Grande Lange l represents an advanced base Caliber L901.0. Unusual design features a new Lange 1 “Luminous” model with brightly illuminated Roman numerals and markers offset from the center of face.
